FAQs About Norwood & Portable Sawmills

You probably have some questions, especially if you're a first-time sawyer. Here are some answers to the most common ones we hear.

Where are Norwood Sawmills Built?

Every Norwood sawmill is quality-built in the USA and Canada – not in China, Taiwan or Poland.

Other companies might try to fool you – They say their mills are made here, but they’re really only packaged here. They don’t tell you that the parts are made offshore by low-paid, unskilled workers.

Every component of every Norwood sawmill is made of top-quality steel by highly-trained, highly-skilled operators with cutting-edge fabrication and machining technologies. The result? – Your Norwood sawmill is built to mill hundreds of thousands, even millions, of board feet, day-in and day-out.

Can I see a Norwood portable sawmill in action?

Absolutely! There are a few ways to do that.

First, let us mail you a free catalog & demo DVD. You can also visit us at one of Norwood’s factory warehouses. Or come see us at a nearby tradeshow. Or, chat with a Norwood bandmill owner near you and see their sawmill in action. With over 35,000 Norwood sawmills running, there’s probably one in your neighborhood. With their permission, we can put you in touch with a Norwood owner in your neck of the woods. Contact us to find the Norwood sawmill owner nearest you.

Can I cut hardwoods with my Norwood band sawmill?

You bet! Norwood owners routinely cut oak, ash, cherry, walnut, butternut, maple and birch – with beautiful results. Even super-hard exotic hardwoods in Africa and South America!

Why are Norwood log decks modular?

Norwood ships all sawmill equipment in compact knock-down form on 4’ x 4’ (1.2m x 1.2m) pallets to save you the high cost of shipping large, over-length equipment (a fully-built sawmill can take almost a whole full-length truck to transport!). But you don’t compromise strength – you just save money. A second huge advantage is that, if you accidently damage any portion of your log deck, you only need to replace a section of the frame and not the whole bed. That’s more money saved!

Is the LumberPro's log deck strong?

Yes, absolutely! The rails are a double-plated 2” x 8” galvanized steel to nearly 1/4 of an inch (5.5 mm). But it’s not just the amount of steel that gives the LumberPro portable sawmill’s bed so much strength – it’s the way the rails are formed. We precision-form the rails in our 400 ton press to add strategic strengthening debossments – engineered depressions formed right into the steel that boost rigidity and strength. Debossed steel is actually stronger and more rigid than flat, unformed steel. Norwood’s debossed-steel technology is super-strong – thousands of hardworking Norwood portable sawmill owners prove it every day!

How reliable are Norwood sawmills?

Norwood has been manufacturing portable sawmills for 25 years. With over 35,000 sawmills in the field, hard at work in over 100 countries around the world, we know that they’re reliable. We believe in using premium materials and fabrication technologies. For example, Norwood sawmills are protected by industrial-grade powder-coat (not just wet paint which chips, scratches and rusts-out in no time). Powder-coat may cost a lot more, but it’s worth every penny – Your sawmill is an investment; it has to stand up.

What kind of warranty and guarantee do you offer?

Norwood's bandmills are the only portable sawmills on the market that you can customize to suit your needs. Choose the right power for you. What is a board foot?

A board-foot is a specialized unit of volume for measuring lumber in the United States and Canada. It is the amount of wood contained in an unfinished board 1 inch thick by 12 inches long by 12 inches wide (1” x 12” x 12” = 144 cubic inches = 1 board foot).

How many board feet in a cubic metre?

One cubic metre is equal 423 board feet.

I have no sawmilling experience. Is that okay?

What about sharpening my sawmill blades?

Sharpen your sawmill band blades at least every couple hours. Proper blade maintenance is critical to making smooth cuts and to prolonging blades life. While two hours is a rule of thumb, the time between blade changeovers will depend on many variables including how clean the logs are and what species they are.

How do I sharpen and set my sawmill band blades?

The easiest and most cost-effective way is to invest in your own sawmill blade optimization equipment. Norwood offers affordable, precision-machined band blade sharpening and setting equipment so you can maintain your blades as often as you want – when you want. Unlike those expensive blade sharpening services, when you have your own equipment, you don’t have the aggravation of coiling, packaging, shipping and waiting … waiting … waiting for your blades, or the mounting costs of paying … paying … paying all the time.
