We have cut what I think are called cookies, round slabs from logs mounted upright on the bunks but have ran into serious cracking like almost in 2. Any ideas on how to prevent that and what to do now that we have them?

The problem is probably because of drying.

As it dries, the edge loses more moisture than the center, and it contracts more.

Best way to keep it from happening is to dry it before you cut cookies.

An alternative may be to drill a hole in the center, so as it contracts, it can pull in toward the middle. This may work with some species, but I haven't really tried it, so I can't say for certain it works.
