I have not seen any new topics since all this spam, it's uncontrollable. I miss seeing all the great projects and knowledge for the veteran saw millers.
Still some sawyers lurking in the shadows lol. Check out oldpath05’s post on his MX34 power feed - he put up a couple of videos that are good. I’m just glad to see some sawyers posting. I agree with DaveM - we’re just going to have to take the forums back and hopefully Norwood will give us some moderators.
I am constantly getting emails about new responses. 99% of them are freakin' spam. Maybe we can get most of the regulars to put some pressure on Norwood to either clean it up or blow it up. 🤬
Scott F I feel your pain - I got my HD36 5 years ago and it wasn’t anything like this. Norwood made mistakes, but I could call them and they always made it right. I had to wait to receive my mill, but the forums were good and I was able to use the time to learn. Once my mill was functional though I have loved it and I don’t regret buying it - I hope your mill serves you as well as mine has. I’ve been waiting for a couple of months for a four foot extension for the mill - getting impatient. Hope you get your mill up and going.
I did receive an email a couple of hours ago letting me know that my missing parts have shipped and should be here Friday.
I am dissapointed in the quaility of Norwoods customer service but at least they are making things right.
I think that just as soon as the sawdust starts flying I will be happy.
I’m in the process of getting a small river table poured for my wife - going to use some oak from the very first log I cut on the mill. Looking forward to it lol.
DavidM, what kind of resin do you use to pour the "river" on the table? I made a bench from white oak slabs that have a few insect holes, cracks and other defects that actually give it character and I was thinking of painting the defects black and then filling them with some type of resin before sealing the entire bench. I would like to stay with a water based sealer but I dont want to have issues with non compatible finishes. What would you suggest?
After waiting 4 months to get it and a week of do and redo we have finally got our new HD38 up and running - YEY :D - now if I can just figure out how to install and mount the digital scale on it - instructions are horrible.
Congratulations getting up and running! Hope you enjoy it - I know that my time spent on the mill is very relaxing. I kinda eyeballed the bigger capacity of the HD38 but can’t even come close to justifying the expense - plus wrestling a 36” live oak log is bad enough. Don’t want to go any bigger but the additional cutting distance between the guides would sure be nice. Right now when I cut something wide I pull the guides and cut really slow.
I am brand new to sawmilling. w-We had a tornado come through my proerty a couple of years back and I decided that with the price of lumber I could make use of the fallen trees rather than trying to burn them. I started studying sawmills (chainsaw and bandsaw) and after watching all of Steve Boyts tutorials I decided on the LM30. I only intend to mill lumber for my projects and do not have any plans on going into the lumber business.
I really wish this forum was like it was when I got my mill - it made it a lot easier to learn to how to use my new mill. I also cut for my own use, but since I got started I’ve milled logs for others as well. It’s pretty great to get paid to do what I really enjoy lol. If I can help you get started by sharing any information IM me and I’ll try to help you. Lord knows sawyers on this forum have helped me enough. If you post a question here someone will have your answer and come through for you. Please keep me posted on your progress - hopefully you’re slinging sawdust soon!
Thanks David, I have my bed completed and had started on the sawhead when I encountered the missing box of parts. I should be able to get started again in a couple of weeks. I will try to get some pictures. My first set-up is a very temporary location, I will use the mill to get the timbers I need for the intended location.
Welcome Scott !! I also only mill for my own & a select few friends use. (Those that help me lug the logs from the woods). We have many Amish around here & there is no way you could compete commercially with them. The nice thing about having your own mill is that you can take some "ugly" short logs & take the time to mill some slabs & thicker pieces to make some awesome tables & cabinets. You can also mill boards to 3/4 to 1/2" for boxes & small projects. Try to buy thinner lumber from a store !!
Thank you Dave, the responses that I am getting from the members of this forum is making me feel a lot better about the Norwood purchase. I am sure that I will have a lot of new "friends" that want me to mill lumber for them now that I have the sawmill.
I have a small property that is off-grid and a limited supply of logs. I do not want to sell lumber and end up not having what I need for my projects.
I am a member of another nonrelated forum where they ask us to do a new member introduction, I did not see that here. Do you guys think it would be helpful to do something like that?
Personally I think that a new member intro would be great. In the past members were so active that they knew who was new and new folks were welcomed - I know that I was. Unfortunately in the last couple of years spammers have taken over the site and most of the old timers don’t participate in the conversation anymore because it does take a lot of time and effort to wade through the BS to read a legitimate sawmill post - I try to scan through every day or two but honestly I don’t look at all the posts. What we need is a couple of moderators who can ban anyone from the site who abuses it but so far Norwood hasn’t seen fit to do it. I only still watch the forums because honestly I would have had a very difficult time getting started without it and I’d like to see new people have the same opportunity.
On the other forum some of the members are Moderators, if there were any members here willing to do so perhaps Norwood would give them authority to moderate.
David, I tried creating a new member introduction on a new thread. However, the problem with that is it needs a moderator's approval and I have not seen any evidence of a moderator on this site.
Once you have gotten a head start on sawing the trees on your property look around and I’ll bet you will find folks around you that will give you trees if you will only get the #*=<€# things off their place lol. I have built a haul trailer and bought an old heavy duty truck so that I can easily pick up logs. I had knee replacement surgery in January and I had people calling me like crazy wanting me to pick up logs. Anyway I would guess that you won’t have any problem getting enough logs.
Dang !! An entire thread of 20 posts & not one idiot tried to ruin it. Is our luck changing ?
DavidM...you are correct about folks wanting to give you logs. I usually make something small, like a clock, to give them out of their wood. My problem around here is that it has been so wet since July of last year that it is difficult to retrieve the logs without destroying their property.
I like that idea (making a small gift); maybe later on after I get some of my projects done I may change my mind and mill for others. Who knows?, it is possible I might love this so much that I change careers.
As for the lack of SPAM on this thread, I wasn't going to mention it for fear of jinxing it.
Thanks for the idea Dave.
I'm a woodturner (not a sawyer yet as my LM30 is only partially assembled), and my practice is that when someone gives me some wood, they get a turned piece from that wood--usually a salad bowl if it's bigger stuff, or wine bottle stoppers if it's smaller. But even without offering a thank-you gift, I get more wood offers than I'm able to use on the lathe. It's almost like it grows on trees or something.
I have made small gifts, given them nice pieces of lumber but by far the most sought after thing folks around here like is Barbecue wood lol. I purchased a splitter soon after I cut up my first tree - people absolutely love for me to spend an hour or two splitting wood from the upper branches (which are not good for sawlogs) and are all to happy to let me remove those huge logs that are so hard to handle. They’re happy - I’m happy! 😊
I highly doubt that we can get Norwood to do anything with this forum; We can't even get them to answer a phone.

I am having major issue installing my digital scale as well on my lm30. did you find a solution/video/guide that worked well for you?
caleb steffenhagen
Yeah, come to find out I should have never been sold the digital scale for the hd38 - it doesn't fit or work - go figure ;-)
