Installing new Clutch on LM29

I bought my LM29 less than a year ago used and the clutch has gone bad. It melted the blade guard plastic like water and melted the belts.

I have purchased new belts and a new clutch. I have no idea what I'm about to get in to in terms of tools needed to pull the old clutch and install the new.

Anyone have suggestions on a video out there or have first hand knowledge you care to share?

IE.. Will I need a special tool to pull the old clutch off and or install the new one?

What is it I'm not asking that someone learned the hard way installing a LM29 clutch?

I haven't done it, but if I recall, putting mine together, I put the clutch on the motor shaft, and there was a key to lock it on the shaft. I believe it was only friction that held it.

I would suggest planning on some boards braced against the frame of the mount somewhere, and possibly against the really solid parts of the engine (covering a fair bit of square inches, so no one point gets too much pressure).

Then you can possibly pry against the old clutch, trying to use even pressure on two opposite sides (so you don't put uneven pressure against the shaft), or possibly using a hammer, tap it off somehow?

These are just guesses I would try, if I had to remove the clutch.

One other thing you could try; since you aren't going to use the old one, you could drill it and run a cable through it; then pull.

You could beg, borrow or steal a 3 jaw puller to remove the clutch.  You may also want to check for any set screws locking the keyway in place.  When replacing the clutch ensure a coating of anti seize compund is applied to the engine shaft.  It should make it easier to install the new clutch and to remove if neccessary in the future.  Blunt force steel on steel is rarely a good thing so if a little persuaion is required a dead blow mallet or brass face hammer should be used.

I removed mine after 18 years without much effort to clean it just remember how many washers for spacers and wear they go when you take it off.

Please let us know how you do. I remember installing mine with more effort than it should have taken. Even greasing the shaft, I had to persuade it on with a rubber mallet and a board against the clutch. I remember saying to myself that this is not going to come off so easy. Hope they last a long time.

So I have an update on the Clutch installation for the LM29. I had ordered the clutch and belts for both wheels. 

The belts were in much worse shape than I had noticed before taking them off. The non drive belt was so worn that it had mushroomed out over the edges of the blade wheel and flattened out. Replacing both belts took less than 5 minutes with no problems at all. Noticed I needed to loosen the tension even more after placing the new belts to get the blade back on the assembly.

The clutch was so simple I couldn't believe it!! I had the old burnt up clutch off the shaft and the new one on in less than 10 minutes. Took the main bolt out in the center of the clutch that attaches to the drive shaft spendle. However, the clutch would NOT come off the shaft by hand with that single bolt removed. So, I decided to remove the four small bolts on the clutch itself and when I did, the clutch slid off like butter! No hammering, no pulling, just a gentle removal. 

The new clutch went on with ease, installed the locking pin,and reinstalled the center bolt that keeps the clutch on the shaft. I could NOT find any torque specs for that bolt so I placed about 30 ft pounds on the bolt..

Ran the tension up on the blade and had to redo the tracking of the wheels now that I have new belts. Made those adjustments and fire up the sawmill and ran it at full throttle to ensure blades tracked properly. 

I'll know more about my blade tension once I slab the hickory on the sawmill as that was the log I was cutting when the clutch went out.

Overall, very easy installation.
