Sawing at High Altitude in the Mountains with the Norwood HD36 & Homesteading in Paradise

Wondering how Derrin Carelli got his LumberPro HD36 to that remote location? The answer to that question is a story in itself.

His 10 acre property sits at 10,700 feet in elevation in the Rocky Mountains, Colorado. It is "land-locked" meaning it is surrounded on all 4 sides by national forest (public lands). The property is 1 mile from the nearest "road" which is an old dirt/rack mining track built in the 1800's with little to no maintenance done on it since then. Calling it "rough" would be putting it lightly.

Derrin came up with the idea to snowmobile his Norwood sawmill into the property, box by box. So, in the spring, Derrin & his friend hand dug a 1 mile-long snowmobile trail in the snow to the property. With the trail complete, he ordered his Norwood LumberPro HD36. A week later, the mill arrived. It was time to start snowmobiling the mill up the mountain. Except now there was a complication. That week, there had been a heat wave & the snowmobile trail had completely melted out.

Anxious to use the mill & not wanting to let Mother Nature rob him of his ambitions, Derrin picked himself up and said, "We are going to HIKE this thing in". And that's what he did.

He got some frame packs and started hiking in the sawmill box by box 1 mile in, and 300ft up the mountain .... 1,750 pounds-worth of sawmilling might.

With true grit and determination like that, you know that the mountain cabin he builds will be every bit as spectacular as the place he's selected to build it.
